Small Businesses that use Mobile Marketing See Huge Gains

Mobile marketing for small business has shown itself to be an effective means of increasing the bottom line. While small businesses that have already taken advantage of mobile marketing have seen definite benefits from it, there are a lot of small business owners who have yet to utilize mobile marketing as the viable advertising strategy that it is.

In a 2012 study released by comScore, they reported that out of 234 million cell phone users in the U.S., over 82 million were using a smartphone. Today’s mobile users are easily researching products, comparing prices and making purchases, all with their smartphones. The numbers show that small businesses in the U.S. who aren’t yet taking advantage of mobile marketing are missing out on the opportunity to grow their business.

Mobile marketing is expected to grow by leaps and bounds in the coming years. As consumers become more and more mobile savvy, it will be extremely important for small businesses to establish a mobile presence on the web. Those that don’t will have an increasingly hard time keeping up with those that do.

The Web.com Small Business Survey reports that 69% of small businesses surveyed agree that having a mobile presence is critical to the growth of their business. Of the 500 small businesses that were surveyed, 14% already have a mobile website, and 84% of those said that they have seen an increase in new business from their mobile marketing efforts alone. Mobile marketing strategies, such as SMS messages, are very trackable, which makes it easy for small business owners to see exactly how well mobile marketing works.

One way that mobile marketing is enhancing small business is through local searches. Smartphone users are increasingly looking for local businesses through the local search apps which come preloaded onto many smartphones. With the rise in gasoline prices in recent years, many consumers are interested in staying closer to home and are utilizing local search on their smartphone to help them achieve this.

A small business that has established a mobile presence, including making sure they are found in a local search, is going to attract the business of more local consumers.

Consumers who find local businesses with the help of a local search app are then introduced to the business by visiting their mobile website. A mobile website that can stand alone is a much better way to attract the business of mobile users than by relying on a desktop website. Mobile websites are shown to be much more effective because they are optimized for mobile viewing and browsing, making it easy for a mobile consumer to use and shop from.

A desktop website is frustrating for a mobile user, and business can be easily lost because of it. A competitor with a mobile website who picks up the business you just lost is clearly coming out ahead.

Web.com’s Small Business Survey showed that 64% of small businesses that currently do not have a mobile marketing strategy have plans to increase their mobile spending this year. That means that 2012 is going to be a big year for mobile spending increases. Don’t be left behind.

True enough, the number of apps that are used for local business and are present in the Google Play Store and Apple Store are staggering. I was wondering if creating an app for my business would really increase my business. Plus there is confusion on whether I should create an android app or an iphone app.

You as the small business owner will have to determine for yourself if your specific business would benefit from building an app. There is no magic formular to use. I would suggest making a list of pro’s and con’s to help with your decision.

As far as android apps vs iphone apps, In most cases I suggest that you go with both so you can maximize the number of people that can utilize your new business app.

Most small business websites are now seeing about 20-30% of their traffic coming from mobile phones. Creating a mobile website for your small business is a way to take advantage of that mobile traffic and provide a good experience to those mobile visitors.
